Where are you now?
I’m actually at law school! I’m studying a combined Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Laws at the University of Newcastle. I finished high school in 2012, and I’ll be entering the second year of my program in 2014.
How, if at all, did the Empire help you get there?
Empire helped me in many ways. First and foremost was the people; there’s something about meeting so many diligent and hard-working people that inspires one to work as hard as one can to achieve a goal. Second, the Empire competition reinforced my love of public speaking and advocacy. Sadly, we don’t have university mock trials here in Australia, but there are similar legal advocacy competitions that I participate in which are awesome.
What’s your favorite Empire moment?
There’s a couple! Seeing my friend give such a great performance as a witness was amazing, and the comments she received from the judge at the end of one of the rounds really were fantastic: “You looked so confident walking up to that witness stand that if I were wearing robes, I would have taken them off and given them to you!” The second has to be the practice round that we did the day before the competition. We were very nervous as none of us had ever competed in the American system of mock trial before. We were relieved when our practice partners were some of the nicest people we’d ever met who helped us with everything they could before the round!
How would you describe the Empire to someone that has never been?
The Empire is the ultimate experience to indulge your passion for public speaking, advocacy, and the law! As well as all of these things, you’ll meet a huge number of amazing people who share your interest, as well as meet lawyers who are actually out there in the courtrooms and law firms of the world. This is all set against the backdrop of one of the greatest cities in the world. Stepping into the amazing streets of New York City felt like stepping into a movie, and you could practically feel the culture and history buzzing around you wherever you went. The Empire competition, the people you meet, and the amazing opportunity to visit and immerse yourself in New York are experiences you’ll never forget!
