Where are you now?
I’m studying to obtain a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics and Mathematics in Trinity College Dublin, Ireland.
How, if at all, did the Empire help you get there?
While I’m not studying law, Empire Mock Trial is about so much more than just law. It’s about meeting new people from across the world. It’s also about being part of a team (in my case leading it), cooperating and working together, constructing a case and being able to stick to it no matter what someone else throws at you. It’s about destroying an opposing team’s case, having the confidence and ability to stand up in front of a large crowd/audience and articulate your views. Obviously it goes without saying that if I were studying law, the Empire Mock Trials would be of enormous benefit. At the time I was seriously considering a legal career, but as I grew older my preferences just changed. But that is not to say that I wouldn’t do it again: I would! I have always been (and say always will be) interested in law and legal matters both civil and criminal; moreover, the experience to be gained from this competition is unimaginable (regardless of what career path you hope to follow).
What’s your favourite Empire moment?
There were many; actually picking one is quite difficult! The simple fact of being in New York itself has to be one; the city itself is a wonder to behold. Of course the mock trials themselves, while challenging and complex, were thoroughly enjoyable and it was great to see months of hard work finally paying off. But there was more to the trip than simply the trials, including the meet and greet sessions where we met the other contestants and the boat trip around Manhattan. So overall, I think possibly the boat trip simply because it offered a great opportunity to relax, get to know everyone better, and meet socially outside of the courtroom. For my team and me it was our final night in New York, so I suppose that has to crown it!
How would you describe the Empire to someone that has never been?
Simple: as one of the greatest experiences going! As I’ve stated already, not only is the experience to be gained from this event unimaginable and spectacular, but it is a jam-packed weekend. Life is what you make of it and missing an opportunity like this is something that you would regret for the rest of your life.
