Always the winners for farthest distance traveled, our friends from New South Wales add a vibrant dynamic to the Empire. After nearly 10,000 miles in the air, the “Aussies” make every minute they spend in New York count! They tour museums, watch Broadway shows, walk around Central Park, dine in Times Square and so much more. They’re typically among the friendliest schools at the Empire, with our 2013 participant capturing the “Spirit of New York” award, honoring the team that best exemplifies respect, civility and sportsmanship.
All Australian schools join us after competing in their country’s national competition, run by the Law Society of New South Wales and sponsored by the University of Sydney. This Competition has been running since 1981 and is open to teams in years 10 or 11 (the American equivalent of sophomore and junior years respectively).
All international schools that apply and are accepted to an Empire program receive at least three video sessions with a member of our staff. During these (virtual) meetings, students are taught about the American legal system and courtroom procedures. Additionally, with the assistance of an Australian barrister, Empire has prepared a guide to help Australian schools adapt seamlessly to an Empire competition. You can download it below.
