Viran Weerasekera
Director of Competition Operations
Based all the way in Sydney, Australia, Viran Weerasekera is Empire’s Director of Competition Operations. He first encountered mock trial in high school, when his team won their state competition, and was then invited to fly the flag for Australia at Empire San Francisco 2015. Since then, his love for and involvement with Empire has only grown; he started as an Associate & Blue Shirt in 2016, then served as Tabulation Director in 2017, before assuming his current position in 2018.
As the Director of Competition Operations, Viran oversees the technical administration of Empire’s programs. He works closely with the Case Committee to publish and revise the fact pattern for each year, writes the framework of rules & procedures, and is responsible for the training and oversight of Tab Officers at each competition. On the ground, Viran and his team of Tab Officers manage the process of pairings, judge assignment, scoring, rule disputes and other technical matters.
Viran is also the developer of PROcess, the electronic tabulation system that Empire licenses for its competitions. This sophisticated system digitises most of the tabulation operation, with pairings, score processing and rankings–all handled by this software.
Outside of Empire, Viran is in the final year of a Commerce degree at the University of Sydney, with majors in data science, economics and banking
